Opportunity available through April 2012.
What?
Scottie's Place is a year-round therapeutic camp located in the mountains of West Virginia that seeks to empower, educate, and enliven homeless and at-risk children. Scottie's
Place has served over 400 children from homeless and domestic violence shelters
from five local states, including North Carolina and Washington, D.C. In
addition to the outdoor adventure camps, Scottie's Place addresses the academic
needs of the children they serve, providing academic and experiential education
with the goal of inspiring, strengthening, healing and bringing success to the
most vulnerable children in our society.
What can we do to help?
As the facilities continue to expand to meet the needs of the ever-growing at-risk and homeless children population, the organization is in need of the following items:
· 15-21 passenger van/minibus
· Science Education Tools - Chemistry set, Binoculars, Microscopes, LCD Projector
· Animal feed – grain or hay
· Building tools – hammers, hand saws, shovels, axes
· Camping gear – tarps, tents, lanterns, flashlights, sleeping bags, mess kits, canteens,
backpacks, water purifiers and compasses
· Clothing - Bathing suits, hiking boots (all sizes)
· Bikes
· Books
· Canoes and kayaks
· Computers
· Dry dog food
· Food– seasonal fruit and vegetables, fresh, dried, or frozen
· Fruit trees, berry bushes
· Greenhouse
· Lumber
· Rototiller
· Tack and packing gear for burros
· Tipis
When?
Since the majority of children who are served at the camp visit during the summer season, donations will be accepted through April 2012 and delivered to the camp in May
2012.
Why?
We can easily turn a blind eye to the homeless man or woman standing on the street corner, dismissing the needs of the individual with justification for past wrong-doings.
However, too-often forgotten are the children in homeless families who have
fallen victim to the failings of the adults in their lives.
Matthew 25:31-40 teaches the need for showing compassion:
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the
angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All
the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one
from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He
will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father;
take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the
world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me
something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a
stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes
and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you
came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or
thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When
did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe
you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these
brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
